Thrown Bowls

Bowls thrown on the electric wheel. This year I have finally been able to begin to master throwing and found I prefer the electric wheel to be much easier than the kick wheel. I’ve gotten really into experimenting with glazes as well trying lots of different combos. My favorite glaze so far is slate green because I love the way the oxide creates a pretty green and black contrast. I also love doing a combo with floating blue and espresso.

Vases

For one of my studio projects I wanted to create something using a natural form so I decided to create vases. I experimented with the glazing by pouring multiple colors down the sides. I’m not too impressed with how it ended turning out but it if I did it again I think I would use brighter colors.

The smaller green vases was one of my first vases I threw on the wheel. I used metallic green and aurora but I wish it came out more matte.

"Life is so short you can't waste even a day subscribing to what someone thinks you can do versus knowing what you can do.”

— Jean Michel Basquiat

Basquiat

Basquiat was one of the first artists I learned about. He created a special bond between me and my dad surrounding art. Him being such a trail blazer for his time and his unique style inspired me to create art not caring what anyone else may think.

I decided to create a piece in an homage for him. I slab built a vase shaped like his infamous crown and used Mishima on the back to create the outline of his hair. I painted underglaze to paint the intricate detailed designs including some of his from his most famous pieces and included words important to me.

Artist STatment/Bio

To me, being an artist has been more than being a person that creates art. It means viewing the world differently and creating work to make the world feel something—to make the world question themselves when they view my art. I have been making and selling art since elementary school in various mediums- painting, drawing, sewing, and photography. I had a business for three years during Covid selling dog bandanas globally and now have been taking photography seriously for about two years and started my own business, “Indi Visions.” Indi is short for Individuality and Visions represents the endless stories you can express. My business motto is, “Understanding the importance of one’s individuality, its importance in expression, and its effects on ourselves and our outer worlds.” Communicating an important message through a wordless script isn’t always easy, which is why I am so grateful to have such a strong network of friends, teachers and family to support me.

My goals are to continue to pursue my education in art at one of the top art and design schools in the world to be able to make an impact on the world by continuing to highlight important topics in my art including race, environmental challenges, and gender and their impact on society. I also want to study through their travel abroad program. I have been taking Spanish for six years now, earned the bilingual proficiency certificate, and am currently in AP Spanish. I want to continue to improve my fluency so when I travel abroad I can be fully immersed in the culture and be able to connect with the people to learn more about them and find new inspirations for my art.
